David Stoll of Beaugureau, Hancock, Stoll, and Schwartz is Arizona's premier veterinary defender (link). Aside from his near-constant presence at veterinary board meetings and Investigative Committee hearings in service of his clients, he often acts as the point legal man for all matters veterinary. In some cases his involvement precedes any malpractice or complaint matters, apparently attempting to head off or remove any problems before they even start.
In 18-29 he apparently advised Tammy Sheedy, the hospital manager at Arrow Animal Hospital, to refrain from releasing video footage in an anal gland expression that allegedly proved fatal under mysterious circumstances. She subsequently directed all further communication directly to Stoll instead of the hospital.
He was present alongside Midwestern University attorney Barbara McCloud for most of a prominent five-pack of complaints against the facility's veterinarians (19-19, 19-20, 19-21, 19-22, and 19-23).
In 21-71 he is said to have offered husband-and-wife doctors $3500 in compensation after their horse inexplicably dropped dead in a trailer on the way home from an equine veterinarian. The Investigative Committee later mused that perhaps the driver drove too fast or the horse passed out from narcolepsy and spontaneously disassembled.
He represented equine veterinarian Justin McCormick in two complaints, 18-124 and 21-13, also representing Christine McCormick in the related 21-12. McCormick would later end up appointed to an Investigative Committee by the veterinary board, investigating respondents represented by his former lawyer.
In 2023 he testified against SB 1383, a veterinary malpractice bill sponsored by Senator Kavanagh, along with a bevy of prominent Arizona veterinarians and Arizona Veterinary Medical Association top people. He argued that the malpractice legislation was motivated by a few specific complaints, also claiming that current statute provides a right of action for the circumstances the bill was intended to legislate. Testifying in favor of the bill were three individuals who had lost pets and later found they had no legal recourse under current law. Two of them had lost pets in complaints involving Midwestern University. True to the roughly 60% of complaints in which Stoll acts as the respondent attorney, two of them had also had their complaints defended against by none other than David Stoll (link).
David Stoll defended veterinarians in about 59.3% of cases in our Tails of Woe.
